Project Kits
These kits are meant to be starting points for your project. Because the competition is not a race like last year, feel free to design your robot in any way you would like and use any components you find that would be useful! The sky, or should we say the depths, are the limit.
RoboSub Starter Kit
The RoboSub project is recommended to be completed in a group of 4. The kit cost is $40 per student within the group (a one time payment for the year) and will result in the group receiving the following parts:
1 Solder Board |
3″ PVC Pipe |
3″x 2″ ABS reducer |
ABS 3″ cap |
2″ x 1″ pvc bushing |
1″ pvc cross |
1″ PVC Pipe |
Handful of LED’s |
35 MM Film Canisters with lids |
12 Volt DC Motor |
Propeller, 1.75″ Diameter / 1/8″ Shaf Hole |
Arduino LCD screen with SPI Shield |
Fuse Holder In-Line |
Fuse, 10 Amp Slow-Blow |
Arduino Nano with Cable |
2 Pcs 2.1 x 5.5mm DC Plug 9V Battery Holder w Cover (for 1x 9V Battery) |
2 Joystick Modules |
Arduino Uno with cable |
LM2596 DC to DC High Efficiency Voltage Regulator 3.0-40V |
1 Channel 5V Relay Module for Arduino |
1 L298N H-bridge |
RF 433MHz Transmitter/Receiver |
Additional parts may need to be 3D printed which are not included in the cost of the kit. These expenses will only be necessary if the group’s design choice makes it so.
The kit fee payment also gives teams access to the club’s consumables including the following:
Small gauge wire for connecting components |
Electrical Tape |
PVC solvent cement |
Wax Bowl Ring |
0.25″ Plastic Sheet for Remote Cutouts |
These consumables will be available at club build meetings during the semester.
RC Boat Starter Kit
This project is also expected be done in a group of 4. The kit cost is $25 per student within the group (a one time payment for the semester) and will result in the group receiving the following parts:
Arduino Uno with cable |
Solder board |
HC-05 bluetooth module |
5V DC electric motor |
1 Servo motor |
Breadboard power supply module |
L293 motor driver |
Assorted color LEDs |
Small gauge wire for connecting components |
PVC or Acrylic thermoformed boat hull |
1 inch diameter boat propeller and shaft |
Propeller shaft coupling |
Propeller shaft strut |
Engine mount |
Brass rudder |
The cost of additional parts as necessary to modify the boat to complete the design challenge for this project are the responsibility of each individual team. However, club leadership knows where to acquire cheap hardware and electronics.
Club Provided Components
The more expensive items such as rechargeable batteries will be provided by the club for use during the project. These will need to be returned at the end of project as they are property of the BYU Mechatronics club.
Additionally, any consumables mentioned above will be available for use at club build meetings during the semester.
